A History of Exploration

European explorers first ventured to Lake Tanganyika in 1858, when Sir Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke reached Ujiji in their quest to discover the source of the Nile River. In 1871, Henry Morton Stanley famously found David Livingstone at Ujiji.

Several significant ports are situated along Lake Tanganyika’s shores, including Bujumbura in Burundi, Kalemi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ujiji and Kigoma in Tanzania. These ports play a crucial role in trade and transportation within the region.
